This subject is for the horses fanatics. Alain SERRUYA, an artist exhibiting on this website is also a painting teacher in Fontenay-sous-bois (FRANCE).
For this first lesson, he explains us his method to simply draw a side head of a horse. In a further lesson we will have a look at other parts of the body of this amazing animal... |
Step I
Start first by sketching a trapezium :

Step II
Following this first step, you will draw two dotted lines passing through the middle of each side (see image). Then, sketch a little arrow (in blue) composed of two small lines at the top of the trapezium (bottom left on the image).
Finally, for this second step, create the location of the jaw by drawing a light cercle (the location is important). |
| Top |
Step III
In the top half of the trapezium, create a line from side to side, by joining the two quarters of its length. Here you don't know why it stands for but you are lacating the space reservation for the eye...
Finish by drawing the last construction lines as shown on the image bellow.

Step IV
When the construction lines are finished, we are going to better detail our sketches... Draw the general basis (the eye in the rectangle previously prepared, the ear the following one, the nastril).
 |
| Top |
Step V
Delete the construction lines and start the details...
You will start fist with the external outlines. Don't try to find the pecfection right now, you will refine them later... Let you be guided by the sketches you have previously created.
You will notice that the top of the circle aims at the location of the mane et the bottom at the jaw...
Step VI
Notice that the mouth is being precised as well as the cheek and the jaw...
You can now start to place the veins and the shadows (on the ear, on the neck and from the nostril to the eye), then the back bone of the jaw.
 |
| Top |
Step VII
At this step, we could think that we draw the bones... but it's not the case ! These are the shadows again. You have to know that in paintings, what creates the reality is generally due to the lights and the shadows.
Step VIII
Now you should stop for a while in order to sharpen your pencil... When you are ready, refine the outlines and detail more the eye (eyelid and glints), the nastril and the ear.
Carry on with the shadows (on top of the eye and in the erea of the mouth).
 |
| Top |
Step IX
Finally, here is the moment for livening up your drawing. Fill the light that recedes along the sharp edges. The eye, bulky, that generates a massive shadow. The nastril : deep but slim, the ear : rangy.
You can finish by refining more the veins, adding several tufts on the mane and smoothing the shadows. Try to remember the horses you have seen in your life : they are smooth and brawny.

You just have finished your first on-line training with L'Art Pour Tous and we thank you for that. For this second lesson, Alain SERRUYA, proposes to work on the same horse head but on the front view. With the same method, we will work by starting with geometrical shapes.
Step I
Start first by drawing the general outlines as shown on the following picture :
You will notice that this image is divided into 3 distinct sections where the upper one is slightly wider than the two others. See the line "Level of the nostrils", the "Location for the eyes" as well as the one of the Jaw. |
| Top |
Step II
On the image 2, you will add the delimitation of the nostrils and the one of the corners

Step III
Start by sketching the general contour of the head without forgetting the location of the eyes orbits as well as the one of the nostrils.
 |
| Top |
Step IV
Complete the details that are used to create the shadows, the ears, the neck and the mane.

Step V
Finish your drawing by blackening the inside of the ears, the nostrils, the eyes, the mane, under the jaw and the bottom of the muzzle. The goal is to highlight the light parts, which will therefore bring the impression of deepness.
Take care of the small intermediate details that represent the muscles of the cheek and the veins.
You have finish this new lesson. Good luck ! |

Next step in your training : The body..
In this third lesson, Alain SERRUYA proposes to work on the whole body in the side view. With the same methodology, we will work using geometrical sketches.
Step I
As you may have seen in the last trainings, each drawing can cover the space of one or several geometrical shapes.
Let's sketch several shapes that will constitute the various parts of the body of the horse.
Step II
On this picture, we can recognise the same sketches but in their final position. You will notice that the shapes 1 and 2 correspond to the head and the neck. The 3 and 4 will be used to position the shoulders, the 5th for the side, the 6th for the rump and the tail. Finally, les shapes 7 and 8 will contain the legs.
 |

Step III
Look at this picture. The parts 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 make a square ABCD. This remark tremendously simplifies the general vision of the drawing.
I don't give you any dimension here in order for you to practise your sense of observation and the proportions.

Step IV
Draw now the contours of the shadows.
 |
| top |
Step V
Put the shadows in the prepared locations. Don't be affraid to strenghen some parts of the drawing such as the shoulders and the side, to get more character.
Now, it's your turn...!
For the next lesson, we will work on the horse at a gallop ! |

Now, let's add a Jockey, and create a horse at a gallop.
Step I
As you have proceeded in the previous lesson, prepare the different parts that compose the horse, except the legs that are in motion.
Make some reference marks at the articulations (the shoulders, elbow, knee, heel).
Step II
On this picture, I show you the drawing of the horse inside the geometrical shapes, plus the legs created around the articulations we just have created.
Note that the elbows and the knees are at the same level.

Step III
As you have proceeded in the previous lessons, it's now time to locate the shadows and start to create the details. You can use some photos for inspiration.

Step IV
Finish your drawing by darkening the shadows. Take your time and respect the light zones that create the glossy coat of the horse.
Good work ! |
