Michel DE RUYCK
Martine Ravignon born
in 1947 passed her childhood in Egypt. She draws, paints and exhibits
since a long time, with more or less happiness, in the shadow of
masters such as Le Greco, Botticelli, Le Caravage, Picasso, Giacometti,
Modigliani or Nicolas de Stael.
It is the multiple
facets of the human being, her works through the big and small history
that inspire her. She tries to translate by various techniques (from
the most tender to the most violent ones) what touches, moves, disturbs
and questions humanity and consequently herself.

"At
the beginning I was painting as I had been taught. The style was
very classic and academic. Many people liked this style, it was
not disturbing and the recipe was simple: a beautiful picture to
be reshaped, observation, focus, and loads of energy I had inherited
from the society I lived in and that didn't fit me. I was painting
in a colored grey as was the world suggested to me (grey).
But
one day things seemed to speed up and I understood that I had to
strengthen my art of colors or greyness would get me. I no longer
wanted to paint as I had been taught. Then, I looked for a graphic
identity based on color and on my cultural heritage (Belgian comics,
marvel comics, screaming metal, rock-n-roll, 80s punk and ska, but
also paintings from the first half of the nineteenth century).
I
have retained the working process from earlier training; I wouldn't
start a canvas before being perfectly satisfied with the sketches.
Maybe I am a frustrated musician who needs to work his piece over
and over before recording it. Then I am a rock-n-roll painter, laying
down my colors through a melodic, honest, simple but always vivid
composition, incessantly pursuing one goal: make your eyes dance
on a frenzied ballad or a crazy boogie.

Since
my childhood, I am attracted by the harmony of the colors. I never
had enougth time, between my two daughters and my work.
It
was necessary for me to wait for the moment of retirement to devote
to this passion: "painting". Since my beginnings, my five
little children are my critics. They are always present at the time
of my exhibitions.
