Increasingly often in this painting the choice of subjects favors the use and manipulation of the artist's materials.
The pastes are sculpted, taking up the imprint of the instruments used, which are of course knives and brushes, to render the surfaces shark or fibrous, mineral or vegetable. They are also molded with the fingertips to produce the velvet texture of a face, scored with a reed for the vividness of a stroke or mixed with sand for rugged, hostile ground. And then there is the color, chiaroscuro neglected in favor of warm and cold colors, contrasts which are never simply light and shade; light is nevertheless everywhere. You perceive the soul of things in the drowsy semblance of backlighting where they stand watchful, incandescent, radiating their vital energy. You almost feel the burning breath of the haystacks smoldering in their inner world of heat and then again you are soothed by the naked freshness of the gentle bathers moving through the cool blue water as an afternoon draws to its close. |
